Puff Johnson, UNC’s newest freshman guard, has a lot of upside. He’s the 60th-rated player in ESPN’s 100 for 2020, but he’ll be in a battle with other freshman guards next year for the starting spot. With Leaky Black and Brady Manek both gone, Puff will have to step up to the plate.
While Puff is a younger brother of basketball great Cam Johnson, the two are remarkably similar. They are both well-built with solid athleticism and a nice scoring instinct. Puff is a solid outside shooter, but he also has a nose for the basket from all three levels. His late-season development has put him in position for a bigger role this year.
Puff’s brother Cam Johnson is also a talented basketball player. Like his brother, he played for the Tar Heels. The two have a lot of chemistry on the court. His mother and his father were former UNC teammates. Despite the resemblance, they have a lot of differences in their play styles.
Puff Johnson brings many traits and skills to UNC. He comes to UNC from a small school in Pennsylvania, where he was part of a stacked recruiting class that included six players. The class was ranked second in the country. Puff Johnson finished his prep career as the 65th-ranked recruit on 247Sports. He was a great scorer and rebounder, and he possesses a similar skill set to his older brother.
